The Founder's Story
|
In 1965, as an eight year old girl living in the Jefferies Housing Projects of Detroit, Michigan, with my mother and two year old brother, I observed the hardships that both my mother and the community around me endured. My mother was an exceptional single parent and did the best that she could to provide for us.
The care of my baby brother fell upon my shoulders at a very young age as my mother worked late hours. Every night, after putting my brother to bed, I quietly got a kitchen chair and placed it inches in front of the door to our apartment. In my mind, I thought that if I guarded the door, my brother and I would be safe. I periodically stood upon the chair to peer through the peep hole to ensure that no one lingered outside. Once I felt confident that no one was trying to break in, I would return to my post and wait for mother to come home. I recall many nights standing suspended in time, staring at the door until it looked as if it were expanding and contracting like a beating heart. I was often so afraid but I tried to convince myself that we'd be alright. One night., while feeling exhausted from being terrified, I cried out in desperation, "God, won't somebody notice us? Won't somebody help us?" And, though the challenges were immense, God did help our small family through those very difficult years. Today, I still hear that cry over and over..."Won't somebody notice us? Won't somebody help us?" But now, instead of it being my voice, it is the voice of many in our community here in Austin, Texas just needing a little help. |
